I have used the Finnish concept of Sisu to overcome many obstacles and adversities in my life. It has given me the strength and determination to continue when I was at rock bottom and the problems I faced seemed insurmountable. Many of these issues were of my own doing, the result of bad choices that I made, particularly as I struggled with intense pain and very poor health due to a lifelong chronic disease. My poor health limited my ability to function, let alone fight and although I didn't realize it at the time it also severely impacted my ability to think clearly with a brain fog that clouded my decisions.
Sisu was the foundation for my recovery, it is the core philosophy that has helped me to not only survive incredibly difficult times but has given me the opportunity to recover and reflect deeply on my experiences. I gained the knowledge and wisdom to understand that I could only reach my potential and goals by being authentic and accepting my path as a Sigma Male.
What is a Sigma Male?
A Sigma male is in many respects similar to an alpha male and shares many of the same characteristics. The major difference is however, that an alpha male assess themselves based on their high position in the social hierarchy, whereas the sigma male avoids the social hierarchy and the need for external validation to focus on personal development and requirements. Sigma males do not need power over others, but rather prefer to regulate themselves and maintain autonomy.
Sigma males are not socially incompetent, but are generally uninterested in social situations. Sigma males prefer solitary pursuits in which they are not required to engage in social politics and can just concentrate on their goals. They are essentially "lone wolves" and are deliberate about who they surround ourselves with. A Sigma male might have a small group of friends and loved ones that they have a profound deep connection with, but these connections are most likely for companionship rather than need.
What is Sisu?
Sisu is a unique Finnish concept. There is no exact English translation but it can be roughly translated as strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity. Sisu is not a reaction to specific circumstances, but rather the ability to maintain an almost stoic approach no matter what the circumstances.
My Sisu Sigma Journey
For most of my adult life, I was a driven and in many respects controlled by the requirements of others, following the so called "social norms" to please others. After many major health, financial and family obstacles were placed in my way, the end result of which was major surgery and prolonged periods in hospital I finally understood that I had to focus on my personal recovery and not the needs of others.
I was literally dying when I realized that the only solution for me was to fully embrace a sisu mindset and lifestyle. In doing so, I would have the opportunity to not only survive but also flourish in what seemed to be insurmountable circumstances.
Initially, I went back to the basics and simply listened to my body accepting that it would be a slow recovery with no instant fix. I lived a very austere life, ate good nutritious food, slept when I felt the need, avoided unnecessary stress, exercised regularly, worked hard in physically demanding jobs and found joy in simple things.
My recovery has been a long arduous process with many ups and downs. Eventually, the brain fog cleared, I regained my health, my strength and I accepted those things I couldn't change. I'm now stronger, wiser and more self-reliant than I have ever been. My path is clear and I have an understanding of who I am and what I was always meant to be, a Sigma male.
